Romustanges
"Romustangs" is the name we gave our wonderful Gypsy Cross Sport ponies. "Rom" the Romani people reputedly called themselves and the people of Europe who first bred "Gypsy" horses and of course "ustang" from the American Mustang. We discovered this cross when we purchased Mona and Lisa in 2009 and that they were a wonderfully fun and intelligent cross. We had so much fun riding them we decided to selectively breed a few of these remarkable animals. A Gypsy Cob crossed with the American Mustang, this is a "designer" breed but selected for specific traits, the Romustangs are a blend of two older breeds to create a new breed more functional in athletic events. The breed has heavy feathering and the gentle nature famous to the Gypsy breed. The mustang cross adds the cleaver, hardy and unique spirit of the American west. The result is a gentle, flashy, willing, athletic horse that can do just about anything. They are really smart though our Romustangs are the first in the herd to notice an unlatched gate or way across the river to hay ground they aren't to be in!
Anyone who has ridden a mustang must have noticed their wild yet intuitive spirit that can build a devoted partnership! Some have said that this cross might contradict the traditional Gypsy breeding for a gentle nature. I feel however, that the Gypsy and the Mustang are akin spirits bound to a people free and nomadic and although they roam different continents the reality and spirituality of cultures is very much connected. The Romustang is a blend of cultures that gives the beautiful Gypsy a competitive Mustang edge that we think will thrive in the US on ranches, rodeos, shows, competitions or just as wonderful devoted companions. These ponies are fast and agile, willing and fearless, gentle and intuitive! I love to ride them as much as my purebred Gypsies, in fact, when there's ranch work to be done, I grab a Romustang, as it will do the work of a Quarter Horse with so much more style! Our Romustangs have excelled on trail, over jumps, working cattle, and will do just about anything asked of them. We can't say enough about this exciting breed!!
